Exercise 6.8

Many colleges and universities have instituted online education programs. These programs are the best way to receive an education without the added stress of having to travel to an actual school. Some people have problems with the transportation aspect of getting to and from a school. Online education will cause that problem to cease for most people. One can gain the knowledge needed in the comfort of their own home. In return, most students will have higher grades due to the access to their work at anytime of the day.

If colleges are going to meet the rising demand for education, they must first address the problems they have internally regarding the accessibility students have for in-class courses. I think the transition will be easier if the schools have the knowledge of what works and what doesn't work for students. The colleges can hire a more detailed staff and create more jobs needed to compensate for the problems students already face.

The online course i took was a hybrid class. It was a chemistry class that I needed to take in order to graduate. The way the work was given out in advance online led me to achieve higher grades, in my opinion. The access I had to the work online was a greater advantage than receiving handouts and doing work in class. I learned a lot more with the work I completed online. Although, I did enjoy the interactions I had in class but the online aspect gave me the greater reward in regards to passing the course.

Recent studies show that you may find more flexibility at an online school than at a campus school. A student will save more money, time, and learn more attending an online course.

Exercise 6.7

With more and more students taking online courses, both the students and the colleges benefit. For example, students can attain an education from the comfort of their own home or wherever they deem necessary. Also, colleges can cut back on some expenses needed in order to accommodate for students attending their school. In addition, some students need to learn in a familiar area to achieve their full potential.

However, online education does have some drawbacks. For instance, students may lack the proper discipline needed to achieve their best effort in the classes. If students fall behind far enough they wont be able to continue their education which will lead to a drop in income for the colleges. Also, some colleges don't have the best services available for students like online tutoring offered 24/7. Some students wont be prepared to jump into online education, and there are no tests to verify whether a student will succeed or fail.

These problems could be easily solved. First, the colleges would need to create more jobs for areas of improvement needed to run a successful online education program. With more services available to accommodate the students the success rate for online education will rise. Second, students will need to be tested on their self discipline habits. A test that will generate the eligibility of being able to take the online courses, in my opinion, will remove the problem of students not being prepared for the courses.

If these problems are addresses, both students and colleges would benefit because it is a win win situation for the students and the colleges. The money needed to pay for school will drastically decrease for the students. The colleges could make a transition to majority of online courses, if all goes well, that will lead to more income for the schools. Students will be able to take the courses needed for their degree from all over the world, referring to the easier access aspect of online education.

Interest in Topic

I chose to discuss how the game of basketball has changed because I love the game. I have played since I was about 8-9 years old. I love its complex simplicity, meaning if you know how to play the game becomes easy. The game requires a lot of time and effort to be great at it.

I would really enjoy arguing how the game has changed. The fact that some believe it hasn't changed at all will add fuel to the fire of discussing various topics on the subject. The feel that comes with being an athlete gives me an incentive to spread knowledge about the sport.

Should College Athletes be paid or not?

To the point that college athletes shouldn't be paid, College athletes already have various programs at their fingertips that will help “compensate” them for their time put into their chosen sport.  The NCAA states that it is merely an amateur activity not worth of having a payroll installed for players/students (. "College Athletes Should Not Be Paid due to Post-Eligibility School Benefits." ,Chronicle of Higher Education 7 July 2006.) There are many ways a college athlete can be successful without being paid for what they do. Many college athletes are on scholarship so they are already compensated in some degree.

In contrast, The NCAA is a multibillion-dollar industry ("College Athletes Should Be Paid.", USA Today Magazine Sept. 2000: 26.) and has the ability to compensate their players with ease. Whether it is a big market school or a lower market school the players are able to be compensated with the NCAA's approval. Many lucrative deals have been signed in the past to increase the revenue for College sports and there shouldn't be a problem in getting more in to help compensate players.

Presidential Debate.

Hillary is appealing more to the pathos of her audience. She focuses on the feeling of Americans. She mentions that she wants to "invest in you", speaking to the Americans of any class of social structure. She mentions that she cares for her supporters and needs them to achieve her goal. She mentions a tax system that rewards work, appealing to her audiences emotions and hard working ethics. Hillary mainly focuses on the middle class Americans.

On the other hand, Donald appeals to the logos and ethos of his audience. He often focuses on the money aspect of his presidential campaign. He mainly wants jobs to be fruitful in the USA again. His slogan is "lets make America great again." He believes that helping the wealth achieve their goal will trickle down to the lower classes. Donald mainly focuses on the upper class Americans.

Where Sweatshops are a Dream.

Kristof begins his essay by stating there is not enough being done to help the poor class of people worldwide. The problem he defines is that sweatshops are not wanted by the upper classes but needed for the lower class. Kristof assumes his readers are middle to upper class citizens.

His purpose in this essay is to explain how the poor would need to work in a sweatshop rather than scrumming through trash and having no money. Working in a sweatshop would be considered a step up from their current living situations. In order to accomplish this purpose he appeals mainly to the upper levels of society. He also appeals to the pathos of the reader.

Finally, he concludes by making the point that it is the manufacturing aspect of the sweatshops has been undermined. Overall, the argument Kristof makes is effective because the poor will need to work somewhere and a sweatshop would be a great place to start.

According to CNBC...

The visual displays the entertaining psychological effect of a person playing a great video game. According to CNBC the top video games of 2011 were: Rage, Bulletstorm, Max Payne, Twisted Metal and Deus Ex 3: Human Revolution. The visual conveys the powerful message that these games will have the same type of effect on the user.

All of the aspects of the pictures background leads the viewer to focus mainly on the central image of the boy holding a console controller playing a highly entertaining video game.

The visual is effective at advertising the data collected from CNBC due to the fact it sways the viewer/user to tap into their own set of personal experiences of playing and enjoying games. Also it persuades to viewer to compare their experiences of joy and fulfillment playing video games to the boy and his wide range of emotions displayed.

These images I collected from a google search emphasize the use of video games. Most young teens play them and it would add certainty to the fact that video games widely influence people. Creating a solid foundation for CNBC's findings.
